According to the saga the dragon/snake was of a major importance in the
past, perhaps because it could be formed into circles, squares and other
shapes which were religious symbols. As gatekeeper to the underworld it
could be guarding earthly and spiritual values, and shedding its skin
made snake immortal. It was therefore very popular as jewellery and art
